Chelsea will kick start their Premier League season with an away match with Everton later today after a stumbling pre season display

Match Preview

Everton will be looking to improve on what was a hugely difficult 2021-22 campaign in the coming season, with the team finishing 16th in the Premier League table, just four points above the relegation zone, as they faced the prospect of dropping into the second tier of English football.

The Toffees remain one of six English clubs to have never been relegated from the Premier League, but they had been picked out as possible European challengers last term, and the only real positive was that they managed to finish above the bottom three, with Frank Lampard helping to secure survival after being appointed in January.

Chelsea, meanwhile, managed to finish third in the Premier League last season despite the off-the-field issues regarding their ownership, so they will again play in the Champions League this term.

The Blues have managed to boost their squad with four players this summer, bringing in Raheem Sterling, Kalidou Koulibaly, Carney Chukwuemeka and Gabriel Slonina, but they are still short of a centre-forward following Romelu Lukaku’s return to Inter Milan on loan.

Pre match conference

Thomas Tuchel on Ben Chilwell and Marc Cucurella: “Maybe they can share 90 minutes between them, let’s see. Ben stars, he feels good and has worked incredibly hard.”

Thomas Tuchel on Ben Chilwell: “Am I 100% sure he’s ready in terms of timing and being ready for Premier League? We will see but we have no other choice. He is mentally totally ready and in terms of physical.”

Thomas Tuchel on Marc Cucurella: “Marc arrived just yesterday in training so he needs to adapt a bit to our style of attacking and defending. He missed some team training sessions in Brighton last week, so they [Cucurella and Chilwell] will share.”

Thomas Tuchel on what he expects on Raheem Sterling and Kalidou Koulibaly’s Chelsea debuts: “Personality and quality. It’s as easy as that. They’ve proven it in big clubs. Raheem has proven it in the Premier League over and over again with intensity and goalscoring threat. We played many times against him and it was horrible! Kalidou brings personality, calmness and experience in defending so hopefully they can both prove it.”
